Historical overview
Mathilakam is generally recognized by historians as the site of a medieval Jain vihara known as the Thirukkunavay or Thrikkana Mathilakam Temple, often identified with Kunavayir Kottam, and the temple was probably destroyed in the late medieval period. [1]
Archaeological work at Mathilakam began with ASI excavations in 1967, followed by 1970 excavations that revealed an 8th–9th century AD foundation in the traditional temple compound and two Rajaraja coins; a 2014 field survey by the Kerala State Archaeological Department was conducted, and in 2020 the ASI granted a licence to a non-profit trust to undertake further excavations.
