Historical overview

Mala has a long multicultural history, with Jewish migrants from Israel and other communities such as Konkan Brahmins, Kudumbis and Konkanis from Goa settling there. It possessed a major inland port, through which goods such as betel leaves, cut stone, toddy, coconuts, spices, and wood moved toward Kochi and other ports. [1]

Historic Mala saw fortifications and conflict, including Tipu Sultan's attack and the Nedumkotta passage through Kottamuri and Vattakotta; the fort was built by dumping soil to a height of 15–16 meters and was later leveled after Tipu Sultan's defeat. [1]

Mala hosts notable religious and cultural landmarks, including a historic Jewish synagogue; Pambummekkattu Mana in Vadama village; and religious institutions such as St. Theresa's Carmelite Monastery (built in 1867 by Blessed Chavara Kuriakose) and the Mukunda Krishna Swami Temple, which celebrated its centenary in June 2010.
