Historical overview

Annamanada is a village in Thrissur district with historical ties to the Kochi kingdom. It was originally part of Adoor gramam in the Kochi kingdom, neighboring the Thiruvithamkoor realm. In the nineteenth century a dispute over ownership of the gramam and its temple was referred to the East India Company, whose arbitrator ruled in favor of Kochi, and meetings between Thiruvithamkoor and Kochi rulers were held in the village, where a court and police station existed during the Kochi period. [1]

The village hosts a range of enduring religious and cultural institutions, including the Annamanada Mahadeva Temple (over 1,000 years old) near the Chalakudi River, which hosts a ten-day annual festival with rites such as Aarattu, and the temple is administered under the Cochin Devaswom board. The village also includes the Christ King Church (constructed in 1984) and Juma mosques; the Christian community established a church and convents, while the Muslim community has a long tradition in Annamanada with the first mosque in the village. A modern cultural development is the Achyuthamaarar Vadya Kala Kendram (panchavadyam center) established in 2001 with village panchayat support. [1][2]
