Historical overview
Pangode Gram Panchayat, located in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, falls under the Vamanapuram block. It was carved out of Kallara and Vamanapuram by Government Order No: 883/77/LA on September 30, 1977. P. A. Rahim was its first President and Pattanikkada Shahul Hameed its first Vice President. [1]
Pangode and Kallara were central to the Kallara-Pangode Struggle during the Indian independence movement; in September 1939 villagers resisted taxes on selling commodities at Pangode and nearby Kallara, leading to clashes with police and deaths. The struggle culminated in the hanging of Kochappi Pillai and Pattalam Krishnan on 17–18 December 1940; the Government of India lists the Kallara-Pangode Struggle among 39 movements that helped unlock independence. The 75th anniversary was celebrated on 29 September 2013. [1][3]
