Nellanad Grama Panchayat
Documented local history
Thiruvananthapuram district · Nedumangad taluk
Historical overview
The locality features early national movement activity, with the Kallara-Paingod revolt beginning here and, in 1938, a toll-tax protest at Venjaramoodu toll gate as part of the anti-tax movement; local groups such as Congress, Sahodarasamajam, and Vallathol Library operated here, and Gandhi's visit drew many participants. [1]
Education and culture began early here, with the first school at Pallikkoodu in 1884 tied to the E. T. K. religious propagation movement; in 1893 the Venjaramoodu Koodepallikoodu school started and later became a high school, also known as Vernacular Middle School or Malayalam Middle School, and Rangaprabhat, Asia's largest children's theatre, is located at Aalantara in the panchayat area. [1]
Economically, the area is linked to the historic Venmanpuram–Venjaramoodu road (1940s) and Venjaramoodu Market, a major market for the panchayat; in 1962 the area formed into Nellanad Panchayat, with M. K. Sankan as the first president. [1]
