Historical overview

Kilimanoor's historic origin lies in an estate ruled by a Pillai chief; Maharaja Marthanda Varma forfeited it to Travancore, and around 1718 the estate comprising several villages was handed over to the family of the king's father who had come south from Parappanad in Malabar. [1][3]

In 1705, the son and two daughters of Ittammar Raja of Beypore Thattarikovilakam were adopted into the Travancore royal house; Rama Varma and Raghava Varma settled in Kilimanoor and married the adopted sisters, linking Kilimanoor with the Travancore lineage. [3]

In 1740, Kilimanoor's forces resisted an allied force led by Dutch Captain Hockert during attacks on Venad, a feat recognized by Marthanda Varma; in 1753 he exempted Kilimanoor Palace-controlled areas from taxes and granted them autonomous status. [3]

In the early 19th century Velu Thampi Dalawa held meetings at Kilimanoor Palace while planning uprisings against the British; he handed over his sword at the palace before his final battle, and the sword was later kept in India’s National Museum and the Napier Museum. [3]
