Historical overview

Kaviyoor Mahadevar Temple, also known as Thrikkaviyoor Mahadeva Temple, lies on a hillock at Kaviyoor in Kaviyoor village, Pathanamthitta, and is one of Kerala’s oldest temples. The main deity is Mahadeva (Shiva) with Parvati, and the complex includes a Hanuman shrine; the temple is administered under the Travancore Devaswom Board. [1][2]

Two early Kali Era inscriptions (4051–4052) dating to AD 951–952 record land donations to Kaviyoor Temple, supporting its antiquity. Architectural and inscriptional evidence in the sources also indicates construction in the early 10th century. [1][2]

Kaviyoor was historically one of the 64 Brahmin villages in Parasurama’s Kerala; Kaviyoor Graamam functioned as the village temple with administration by Pathillathil potties. The Kaviyoor Temple was taken over by the Travancore State Government in ME 1075 (1899–1900), reflecting its wealth and status. [2][3]
