Historical overview
During the Vijayanagara Period, heavy taxation on Tamil weavers prompted Senguntha Kaikolar families to move from Kanchipuram to Kodumbu near Palakkad, where they started a weaving industry and later established a shrine in the local Shiva temple worshipping Subramanya Swamy as their Kuladevta. [1]
Palakkad king mediated a dispute between Senguntha Kaikolar and a Namboodiri over temple worship, ordering Tamil worship for Subramanya Swamy, and legends relate that the genealogy of Manikkavasagar was brought to Kodumbu from Madurai to support this worship. [1]
