AD 1550-ൽ എഴുതിയ Voyages and Travels of Gion Battista Remmusio എന്ന പോർച്ചുഗീസ് ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന്റെ ഒന്നാം വാള്യത്തില്‍ മലബാർ തീരത്തിലെ തുറമുഖങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി വിവരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ വെളിയങ്കോട് 22ആമത്തെ തുറമുഖമാണെന്ന് സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. [1]
ഹിജ்ரി വർഷം അഞ്ചിൽ, മാലിക്ക്ബ്നുദീനാരും സംഘവും യമനില്‍ നിന്നും കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് ഇറങ്ങിയതായി, ആ സംഘത്തിലെ മാലികുൽ ഹബീബ് മുഖേന വെളിയങ്കോട് ദേശത്തെ നാലു ഇല്ലക്കാരും എട്ട് വീട്ടുകാരും ഇസ്ലാം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും അവരുടെ ആവശ്യార్థം ഒരു പള്ളി സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതായി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്; ഇപ്പോൾ ആ പള്ളി കോയസ്സൻ പള്ളി എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്.
