Historical overview

Perumpadappu is a village in Ponnani taluk, Malappuram district, Kerala. Perumpadappu Swaroopam, also known as the Perumpadappu Dynasty, originated from Perumpadappu near Ponnani and later migrated south to establish the Kingdom of Cochin (Kochi Rajyam) after invasions by Zamorins of Calicut. [1]

In the 13th century, the rulers allied with Syrian Christian Merchant Prince Iravikorttan by issuing the Viraraghava copper plate. After Vasco da Gama’s arrival in 1498, the dynasty allied with the Portuguese to counter the Zamorin of Calicut, contributing to Cochin becoming one of the earliest centers of European influence in India.
