Historical overview

Elamkulam is a village in the Perinthalmanna taluk of Malappuram district, Kerala. The traditional agrarian structure centers on three birth-lineage farming communities: Elamkulathu Manakkar, Muthukurushshi Manakkar, and Puthumanan. The origins of the Elamkulathu Manakkar are not clearly known; the Muthukurushshi Manakkars are said to have come from Mannarkattu, and the Puthumanan from Vaikkath. Some accounts note discussions of these groups in later writings, and there are references that the two groups may be treated as the same in historical narratives. [1]

Muslim farming communities have long been part of Elamkulam. The 1921 Khilafat movement is described as a phase of religious harmony in the locality, with protection of the existing communities and no encroachment during that period. The first mosque in the area was Mallishseri Palli; before that, Muslims visited distant mosques such as Puthanangadippalli for prayer, and there were no dedicated facilities for religious study in the area. [1]

Towards the mid-20th century, immigrant farming activity reshaped the locality. In 1947, seven immigrant farming families arrived from Kottayam and began cultivation after clearing 88 acres of land that had been part of Mundekad Supran Namboothiri’s forest; they introduced crops such as chili, cashew, banana, rubber, and cashew-nut. In the 1960s, a cement road to the Cheeratamal area was laid, marking infrastructural development. [1]
