Documented local history

Ulliyeri Gram Panchayat lies in Kozhikode district, within Koyilandy taluk and Balussery block, and covers Ulliyeri village on an area of 25.6 square kilometres with 19 wards. The panchayat's boundaries run north to Naduvannur and Kottur panchayats, east to Balussery, Atholi and Kottur, south to Atholi and Chengottukavu, and west to Arikkulam, Chengottukavu and Koilandi Municipality. As of Census 2001, Ulliyeri Panchayat had a population of 27,805 (males 13,756; females 14,049) with a literacy rate of 90.15% (males 95.79%; females 84.7%). [1]

Ulliyeri Panchayat came into existence on 12 December 1961, and the first panchayat election was held on 21 September 1963. [1]

The locality exhibits diverse topography with highlands and valleys, including about 42 hills and several water bodies; notable site is the Puthanjery Fort area, which is linked to historic movements such as the era of Cheraman Perumal. The main crops are arecanut, coconut and other plantation crops; rice (ne) is not suitable in this area. [1]

Education history within Ulliyeri includes several long-standing institutions: Olloor Elementary School was established in 1912; Kakenchery Government LP School and Narath AUP School were established before 1920; in the 1948–1952 period, communists operating clandestinely led youth education and cultural activities in the area.
