Historical overview

Thiruvambady Gramapanchayath was established on 1 January 1962 and consists of 17 wards covering an area of 83.96 square kilometres (32.42 sq mi), including about 9,000 acres (3,600 ha) of forest. [1]

Historically, in 1805, following Pazhassi Raja's death in battles against the British, the Thiruvambady area came under East India Company ownership; the surrounding lands were allocated to the Kottayam king Kalppakassery Karnoru and the forest to Manniledathu Nair Tharavadu. [2]

1944 onwards, migrants from central Travancore settled permanently in Thiruvambady, with Pattam land-tenure arrangements and land allocations that supported new cultivators. [2]

Educational developments include the first school in the 1920s (Nandanashseri School) established by Kalppakasseri natives; Thiruvambady LP School began in 1947; Sacred Heart High School started in 1955. [2]
