Large-scale settlement in Thalanadu began more than 85 to 90 years ago; its residents are predominantly farmers and rubber or spice cultivators, with crops such as coconut, rubber and arecanut; the area supports medicinal plants and has a literacy rate above 90 percent with unemployment described as very low. In the 1990s, a training institute named TIES was established to provide free training for thousands to obtain government jobs. [1][2]
