Historical overview
Athirampuzha is a historic trading locality in the Kottayam district with ancient backwater trade links. Settlements are noted by around 1200 AD, and Marco Polo described Attiramkari as a port town famous for pottery, cattle, a vegetable market (chantha), and cloth, with Chantha Kulam as a docking hub. Local families helped establish Athirampuzha, which remained a prominent port town until the mid-1900s when road development reduced its prominence, though the old Chantha Kulam boat shed still exists. [1][2]
St. Mary's Forane Church at Athirampuzha was blessed on 15 August 835 AD and began as a chapel of the Kuravilangad church; it later gained Ferona status and became a longstanding religious center in the area. The church complex includes a large church and a smaller predecessor church, and the Saint Sebastian statue was brought to Athirampuzha in 1687 by Leonard D'Cruz; the chapel was elevated to Ferona Church on 1 January 1929. [3][4]
The Saint Sebastian festival at St. Mary's Forane Church is a major annual event that began in 1647, featuring a grand procession, fireworks, and a rich display of ceremonial elements; it is centered around January celebrations with processions between the churches and extended observances. [7][5]
