Historical overview

Kundara has a prominent place in the history of Kerala and the Indian independence movement, including Velu Thampi Dalawa's Kundara Proclamation on 11 January 1809. [1][2]

Industrial development in Kundara followed strong transport links; the Kollam–Sengottai rail line opened through Kundara in 1904, the 1920s saw a cashew industry boom around Kollam and its environs, and the clay processing industry began in Kundara in 1937. [1][2]

An important electrification and industrial infrastructure base emerged: a 66 kV electric substation was established in Kundara on 3 May 1940 as part of Travancore's hydroelectric network; the Travancore Chemical & Manufacturing Company Ltd unit was started at Kundara in 1943; and ALIND was started in Kundara on 2 January 1946. [1][2]

From the 1960s onward, manufacturing continued with a Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company unit started in Kundara in 1964 and later revival efforts including Technopark Kollam at Kundara (February 2011) and renewed emphasis on ALIND, Kerala Ceramics Limited, and related industries from 2016.
