Historical overview
Valapattanam was named after Vallabha II of the Mooshika dynasty (Kolathiri family) and was originally known as Vallabha-Pattanam, serving as the capital of the Mooshika dynasty during the medieval ages. [1]
A fourteenth‑century narrative by Ibn Battuta refers to the ruler of Ezhimala residing at Baliapatanam, suggesting a shift of political authority from Ezhimala to Baliapatanam by that period. [1]
In the sixteenth century, Portuguese Duarte Barbosa mentions Baliapatanam (Baliapatam in European records) as the residence of the ‘king of Cannanore’. [1]
