Muzhappilangad Grama Panchayat
Documented local history
Kannur district · Kannur taluk
Historical overview
Prior to the 1956 state reorganization, Muzhappilangad formed part of a region that included Mammakkunnu and Edakkad in the old Chirakkal taluk; landholding was feudal, attributed to Chirakkal-Arakkal dynasties and temple trusts of the area. [2]
In the mid-20th century Muzhappilangad saw political activity: a unit of the Indian National Congress was formed here in 1937, and a faction of the Communist Party of India was formed in 1948; the community also participated in temple-entry agitation opening temples to Harijan worshippers. [2]
The 20th century also marked infrastructural and civic developments: the first train crossed Muzhappilangad in 1901 via Edakkad railway station; in 1930 a road along the national highway connected Muzhappilangad with Thalassery; Kerala state was formed in 1956; a public cemetery (smasanam) was established in 1957 and land-recording practices for tenants persisted until 1965.
