Historical overview

From the 6th century CE to the 11th century CE, Kunhimangalam lay within the Mushika Kingdom, during which the Ezhimala port came into existence. [1]

In 1962, Kunhimangalam was granted its own panchayat, with U. Kunhiraman serving as the first council chairman and holding office for twenty-four years. [1]

Medieval records note the western approach to Kunhimangalam as Changoorichal, after a Chinese ship, Changu, visited the area in the 12th century CE, and Marco Polo recorded the place name 'Ezhimala' in the 13th century CE. [1]
