Historical overview

The Kovilakam ('Palace') of Kolathiris, the erstwhile ruling dynasty, is situated in Chirakkal, and the Kolathiri of Chirakkal was known as Chirakkal Raja (the king of Chirakkal). The southern branch of this family ruled Venad and is today known as the Travancore royal family. [1]

The Kolathiris are described as successors of the Mooshika kings who ruled northern Kerala in the first century AD. The Mooshika Vamsham, a Sanskrit text attributed to Athulan and dated to the tenth century AD, discusses the history of northern Kerala. [1]

Bekal Fort and Chandragiri Fort were originally under the Chirakkal Rajas until Shivappa Naik's invasion of Kolathunadu, a historical note mentioned in Chirakkal history. [1]
