Documented local history
Idukki district · Peerumade taluk
Historical overview
Peermade sits at about 915 metres above sea level in the Western Ghats, roughly 85 kilometres east of Kottayam on the route to Kumily. Historically, the locality was used as a summer retreat by the Maharajas of Travancore, a time when the region was largely inaccessible and inhabited by tribal communities; it lies on a mountain axis that linked Travancore with Madurai in ancient Tamilakam, with the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary located nearby (about 43 km away).
