Historical overview

Kumily is a revenue village and Gram Panchayat in the Idukki district of Kerala, situated near Thekkady and the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Its modern development began in the early 20th century under the Travancore princely state, when high-range forests were cleared for plantation agriculture and settlers from central Kerala and Tamil Nadu were resettled to cultivate cardamom, tea, and rubber. [1]

Following Indian independence, Kumily became part of Travancore-Cochin state in 1949; after the formation of Kerala on 1 November 1956, it was included in the newly created Kottayam district before being transferred to Idukki district on 26 January 1974. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1950 and was later designated a tiger reserve in 1978. [1][2]

By the 1980s, Kumily emerged as a gateway town for sanctuary visitors, with homestays and spice shops replacing some plantation labour. The Kumily Grama Panchayat was formed under the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, covering 816.73 km² including revenue villages Kumily and Thekkady. [1][2]
