Historical overview
The modern history of Elappara began in 1836 with the clearing of the Vembanadu region by Henry Baker, a CMS missionary; the Tyford estate and the Penshurst plantation were among the first tea estates located within present Elappara panchayat. [1]
During the Kollam era, the region that includes present-day Elappara formed part of the Thekkumkur kingdom and was later acquired by Manavikrama Kulasekhara Perumal, founder of the Poonjar dynasty; local tradition notes Manavikrama resting at Thangalpara near Kolahalamedu. [1][2]
Plantations began to be established from the 1870s; the tea cultivated in the area was known as Peerumedu hybrid tea, a variety with origins in China; by 1896, most of the land had been brought under tea cultivation, and in the early 1900s many plantation workers settled permanently in the region. [1][2]
Elappara panchayath was formed in 1953, including 17 wards, and belongs to the Azhutha block of Peerumedu taluk. [1]
