Ayyappancoil Grama Panchayat was formed in 1977 and spreads over an area of about 42.68 km2. [1]
Ayyappancoil is noted for the Periyar River suspension bridge connecting Ayyappancoil and Kanchiyar and for the Sastha Temple on the river bank, which was submerged when the Idukki reservoir filled and later shifted to Thoppipala. [1][2]
