Historical overview
In 2003 the Kerala government selected Kumbalangi as a model village and launched the Kumbalangi Integrated Tourism Village project to transform the island into a model fishing village and tourism spot, with the panchayat involved in implementation. [1]
Under the Kumbalangi project, Kalagraamam, an artists' village, was planned to be established on four acres inside Kumbalangi, after adjusting initial plans to erect a cottage in the backwaters to avoid ecological disturbance. [1]
