Historical overview
Kalady is a town located between Angamaly and Perumbavoor, east of the Periyar River, in Ernakulam district, Kerala, and is notable as the birthplace of the 9th-century Indian philosopher Adi Shankaracharya. [1][2]
Historically, Kalady was under Thekkemadom kingship, a Kerala-based Shankaracharya mutt; in 1906, the paternal house properties of Sree Shankaracharya Kappilly were acquired by the Government of Travancore (Gazette 1374 R452 dated 27 January 1906). The Raja of Travancore acquired the Kalady area from Kappilly Mana in 1905 and handed it over to the Sringeri Math, which now maintains the Mandap. [1][2]
Kalady's birthplace identification and later arrangements are tied to 1905 when Nadukaveri Sreenivasa Sastra of Sringeri Math identified Kalady as Shankaracharya's birthplace; that same year the Raja of Travancore acquired the Kalady area and handed it to the Sringeri Math. Kalady's centenary was celebrated in May 2010, and its rediscovery story was documented in a Sringeri Sharada Peetham film. [1][2]
