Historical overview
In the 1940s, the Communist party gained influence among coir workers in Punnapra, leading to a labour agitation that culminated in the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising. [1]
There is a memorial known as the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising martyrs' column, and every year a procession is held from Valya chudukad in Alappuzha to the memorial. [1]
